These instructions are listed here with the permission of Donna Kato.  She is the one who taught me this technique and has allowed me to share it with you.

STEP ONE

Roll out sheets of clay in different colors and stack as shown.  Then slice of sections of the block the same thickness as the stripes.

STEP TWO

Roll out a thin sheet of black clay and place the cut slabs onto it.  Trim away the excess.

STEP THREE

Roll the length of clay as shown into a jelly roll.  Slightly reduce to compact the cane and eliminate air bubbles.

STEP FOUR

Cut 2/3's of the cane and set aside.

STEP FIVE

Take the 1/3 section of cane and reduce to the same length as the 2/3 that was set aside.

STEP SIX

Stand the larger cane on its end and cut into it making an X all the way through.  (The four sections in the front of the photograph show how you would cut into it)  After it is cut, your cane should look like the colored triangles above.

STEP SEVEN

Place two of the triangles on their edges with the black covering facing the center.  Lay the reduced rod into the center.  Place the remaining two sections of the cut cane on top of the roll as shown.

STEP EIGHT

Reduce and cut into fours.  From this point, match the patterns to make a new square.  You can continue to reduce, cut and match as many times as you want until you get the effect you are looking for.

Thanks to Donna Kato for letting me show you this technique.
